My passion is supporting young people...
Over the past twenty years, working with young people in a range of different settings, I have been passionate about empowering children and young people to feel good about who they are and the talents they each bring. Each child is unique and learns most effectively when feeling valued and supported. It is immensely rewarding to engage young people in learning opportunities from a place of wonder and enthusiasm, and to see them enjoy learning in and of itself, as well as gaining understanding and mastery of the world we live in.
Teaching Experience
My work with children and young people has predominantly been in the field of education. This work includes being a private tutor, a primary classroom teacher for a 7 year cycle in a Steiner school, various teaching roles in the government system as a Primary School, High School and learning support teacher, and a number of years working as a home tutor with Indigenous students and their families. I have also worked as a Course Tutor for pre-service teachers in the Education Faculty at Canberra University.
Student Welfare Officer
I spent some time working part-time in a primary school as a Student Welfare Officer. This role offered yet another lens through which to understand the way in which children and young people experience the world and how best to support them. This work provided opportunities for training and practice in supporting young people with a range of challenges including grief and loss, anxiety, and emotional self-management. I found that with the children I worked with in this environment, indeed in all environments, it is vital to first build a good rapport. From there our work together aimed to build in each child a positive sense of self and an active growth mindset towards life and the way they could engage in all their experiences fruitfully, especially those they encountered in the educational setting.
Foster Care and Youth at Risk Program Management
Outside of teaching, I have trained and worked as a foster carer in the ACT. I also managed the Messengers ACT youth-at-risk arts access program for Secondary students for a year. Both these roles allowed me to extend my support of young people beyond education and into the field of health and wellbeing more generally.
Holistic Health Care
With my training in Classical Herbal Medicine, Iridology, Bach Flower therapy and body work, I am able to work more holistically with young people. Bringing these elements together with a deep understanding of education allows me to better support young people. Whilst tutoring sessions do not extend into these additional health fields per se, I am very happy to arrange to have a consultation about your child's health and wellbeing if you feel it may be beneficial to their learning.
